Acceptable Use Policy

The Acceptable Use Policy is an agreement that a person signs to before performing a certain task. It lists what is and is not acceptable and the punishments if the rules are broken.

AUP is used at Glenvar for laptops and plagiarism.

Five Rules for Laptop Usage are:
  • Do not download music or games--this is important because games and music can cause viruses that damage computers
  • Do not play games on your laptops or use personal websites--this is important because you need to focus on school work at school and keep the school laptops separate from personal life
  • No pornography or personal pictures--this is important because that kind of this is unnecessary at school
  • If anything is lost by the end of the year, you have to pay to replace it--this is important so you know the punishment if you lose parts of the laptop
  • Do not break or purposefully damage the laptops--this is important because we must understand the laptops are a privilege and we should respect them

At a job the AUP could be useful so that the users know their personal doings on a laptop can be seen by administrators. They need to understand how to balance their privacy.

AUPs are necessary because in order to have some kind of ruling and order you need to create rules and policies that everyone has to follow.

If I were a boss of a large company my rules for each individual with a computer would be to keep personal e-mails at home, do not get on any websites that involve games, videos and personal information and don't do anything you wouldn't want me to see.
